Miconia calvescens (miconia) is a tree that was introduced to Hawaii as an ornamental plant. Miconia has now escaped into the wild and poses a severe threat to the health of our forests, watersheds and agricultural lands.
Miconia is currently found on Kauai only in the Wailua area. We need the help of all nearby residents to stop the spread of this highly invasive species. We would like to ask for your cooperation in allowing a field crew from the Kauai Invasive Species Committee (KISC) to conduct a miconia survey on the property you own or legally occupy (land only, not dwellings). Please be informed that under the State of Hawaii Bill SB552 HD2 the land owner/current tenant cannot be held liable for the safety of the crew while on your property. If miconia plants are found, we ask that you permit KISC personnel to destroy this noxious weed either by pulling smaller plants or cutting and locally applying herbicide to larger plants.
Please indicate your permission by electronically filling out and submitting the miconia permission form (582Kb) at your earliest convenience. Feel free to contact KISC with any questions or concerns.
